Enter Thorsten Skoerat. A native of Cologne, resident DJ and co-founder of the Cologne based event collective Jockeyclub, and one hell of a nice guy. We heard and loved the first versions of his Treibstoff debut over six months ago, but Thorsten insisted on waiting to release his music until each element was just right. So, we waited, and sure enough, Thorsten returned with two new versions of “Catflag” and “So Far” with everything in the right place. Our conclusion? It was well worth the wait. Please welcome Thorsten Skoerat with Treibstoff’s 102nd release – the Catflag EP.

You may know him as Spetterphat, with releases on labels like Repressure Recordings and Manual Music Holland with support from some of the biggest names in the business. Now, the Dutch-born producer embarks on a new phase of his career, producing under his own name, as Rob Hes himself. After delivering a powerful demo, he joins Basmati for his self-titled premier. In “Living Like a Waveform” Rob layers dark grooves together with very subtle melodies, just enough to keep up the suspense. Paired with a remix from German Techno duo Microtrauma, this EP promises to pack a powerful punch.

Feedback:

Mr.Statik/Bpitch Control: “The one true ring is definitely the one for me.”
Steve Parry: “The One True ring is massive!! Loving both mixes of Living Like A Waveform too. Very good package.”
Benoit C/Tsugi: “coool ep”
Francesco Assenza/www.sleepiscommercial.com: “energetic release, will try the groove of the ring thank you for sending”
Tom Novy: “Nice little Ep with great Techno. Thankxx ”
Orde Meikle/Slam: “cool trax – will spin this – thanx guys”
Derek Taylor: “An outstanding EP. Every track is superb.
Gabriel Le Mar: “warm hearted music – very nice”
Axel Bartsch: “another dope release by basmati, like all of it.”
Riyaz Khan: “diggin’ the low slung bassline and deep mysterious atmoshperes – all three original mixes are exciting tension filled listens !”
Danilo Schneider: “The One True Ring for me”
Bebetta: “great work! I will play it.”
Johan Nilsson/Digitally Imported Radio: “Great release. Loving the Microtrauma Remix”
Paul Hazendonk/Manual: “Nice to see Rob’s debut on Basmati. Living Like A
Waveform is the one for me!”
Eelke Kleijn/Outside the Box Music: “Love it! Got Living Like a Waveform from Rob and have been playing it heavily, charted it at one this month.”

200 Records is very glad to start their new label Lunte, which releases music one step beneath the dance floor, with the Russian Artist Alexander Rotov and his project “Stop Thinking”. At the end of the nineties, he started a drum and bass project called “Subwave” together with Gleb Soloviev. In 2001 Subwave became very successful with releases and remixes on Tech Itch Recordings and the famous Moving Shadow label. They teamed up in 2007, and since then Alexander is working solo in a techno and minimal style, while Gleb continued Subwave, lastly with an album on Metalheadz.

Stop Thinking’s musical approach is always techno, but in a moody, condensed style. His tracks on his new “Feelings” EP are mostly 8-minute sound journeys with a lot of elements to listen to. Every time you hear it again you’ll find new details.

The album, the full-length, the long player; an artist’s showcase, a look into one’s creative mind, his deepest secrets, fears, failures, and triumphs.

Generally, an album serves one of two functions. The first being a club-centric compilation that feels a lot like listening to 6 EPs one after another resulting only in the reassurance that yes, this artist can still satisfy a dance floor. The second works as a genuine exposé of an artist’s creativity, music knowledge, and intelligence, but most of all reminds us that there is a human behind the music; a human that understands not all Techno should be enjoyed under the shade of a Funktion One.

“Shortcake Strategy” is Falko Brocksieper’s third full length and it exemplifies the ladder. Though the introduction might feel like a familiar place in between synthesizers and kick drums, it’s merely a beginning; not at an indication of what is to follow. Within seconds of hearing “Avoid”, it doesn’t take long to acknowledge this is something truly different.
“Heavy Day”, Brocksieper’s last album was released in 2008 on his own Sub-Static imprint. It was, like all of the releases before, high quality Tech-House. It contained moments of song-like beauty, but nonetheless remained connected to a minimalistic approach.

Five years later, Falko’s growth is clear. In “Shortcake Strategy”, fairytale-like melodies are backed with thought provoking harmonies that pave the way for an explicitly visual experience. We have been introduced to a new face of the Berlin-based producer. Shortcake is a simple recipe. It doesn’t take a lot of planning or much thought or attention when preparing it, and in the end, it will be light, fluffy, sweet, and perfectly satisfying. Falko might say the same about his approach to the creation of “Shortcake Strategy”, yet the end product sees his most dynamic and emotional productions to date, leaving us with the feeling that this comes from a strategy that requires far more thought, and is far more complicated than that of a sugary dessert.

Feedback:

More than a year after its release, we have the privilege to experience again a masterpiece reworked by two members of Treibstoff, Marcel Janovsky, and Till Krüger. Janovsky, sticking to his roots, delivers a minimal techno version with just enough of the original that creates a suspenseful groove that will leave the floor in a frenzy. Till Krüger’s remix is unmistakably “Krüger”, instilling his warm techno style with segments of Ananda’s brilliant melodies. Each producer subtly uses pieces of the original to provide a new experience without taking anything away from it. We are proud to welcome these two great producers to Basmati.

Hot on the heels of his release for WIR, Arjuna Schiks returns with a monster! “Decisions” has it all; addictive synths over playful bass lines and a composition of melodies that make this track undoubtedly catchy. Here is our challenge to you: listen to the first minute of “Decisions” and then try to spend the next few hours not humming it to yourself. For fans of Gabriel Ananda, this EP should not be missed.
Flip the record over for Nhar’s remix. Maintaining Arjuna’s main theme, Nhar’s interpretation is equally as uplifting, but less Techno, more Disco. This could very well be the set closer for many open air events to come.
